The Motorway from
Florence to Viareggio
now Motorway Firenze-Mare

Begun in 1928, this was Italy's second motorway after the one linking Milan to the northern lakes.
The first stretch covering the 42 km to Montecatini was opened on 6 August 1932; another 24 km between Montecatini and Lucca were opened on 28 October 1932, to mark the 10th anniversary of the Fascist Era; and the third and final stretch covering the 17 km between Lucca and Migliarino was opened on 6 August 1933. The motorway, almost 82 km long and with a carriageway 8 mt wide, was designed primarily to encourage tourism. In 1932 a basic return ticket from Florence to Montecatini and back cost 8 lire for a "cabin cycle", but the tariff increased according to the motor vehicle's engine size. A 3 lire supplement was levied on all vehicles between midnight and 6 a.m.
