In her (Italian Villas and Their Gardens): (London 1903), Edith Wharton writes: “Today... a garden must give us the impression that the house extends into the open air, and its several aspects must conceal one another in such a way that, when walking in the garden, one receives a set of impressions rather than a single view...”
